Needless to say, there went our savings!

Because of all this, I recently went to get WIC for my 10-month-old and myself to help out. The nutritionist said something that I have been stewing on ever since, and that is that "breastfed babies generally have too-low iron levels, so I'm going to give you a breastfed baby vitamin and you need to make sure he gets it everyday." Umm, what?? It didn't make any sense to me that breastfed babies would IN GENERAL have too-low iron levels. I thought I remembered reading a post here, so I came and looked it up and followed the link to your source. Thanks! I'm not going to worry about my baby's iron levels :)WoozleMomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06893897494168460878noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-410440710208780456.post-29146793996688304572010-05-08T17:34:23.626-07:002010-05-08T17:34:23.626-07:00Thanks for this post. The low Vit D phenomenon is not just an issue of sunlight exposure/sunscreen use/less time indoors, etc. Our food industry has also inadvertently removed naturally-occurring vitamin D from the best sources by feeding animals byproducts that their bodies cannot properly digest (which leads to the need for the use of antibiotics, and then the cascade of intervention continues). Studies show that meat that comes from pastured animals (pigs, cows, etc.) have up to 5 times more vitamin D than industrial-raised animals (found especially in the fat of these animals). So if you can also get your hands on good grass-fed (but especially "pastured") meats and poultry, lard (don't skimp on that yummy chicken skin, either!), etc. you're giving yourself one of the best sources of vitamin D, especially during the winter! ;)Mama Vhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06102510420296912721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-410440710208780456.post-4474634797337084612010-03-29T21:22:06.526-07:002010-03-29T21:22:06.526-07:00Liz already commented on this, but her and I have ...Liz already commented on this, but her and I have talked about the iron supplementing thing a lot. I've had pediatricians really bug me about starting rice cereal with my babies 'cause "they're not getting enough iron." I just can't believe, like Liz said, that God created this perfect food for my baby and just 'forgot' to include enough iron. I've chosen to believe that my children are getting everything they need while I'm nursing exclusively, and refuse to believe that adding bland, useless white carbs like rice cereal is better for them than breast milk in there tummies, and the healthful foods we add when they start to show an interest!Hilaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03781058037409966491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-410440710208780456.post-82216366483195416822010-03-27T14:34:10.339-07:002010-03-27T14:34:10.339-07:00Great post! And I too have stopped using sunscreen and now believe in moderate sun exposure.

Are you in Phx too? :)Dianahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10301075330910381544noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-410440710208780456.post-47693296014899705542010-03-27T11:40:47.014-07:002010-03-27T11:40:47.014-07:00P.S. Personally, on days when I don't get out into the sun much, I try to take between 2000 and 4000 IU of Vitamin D in capsule form to keep my own levels and my breast milk's levels adequate.Lanihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07513306977618928729noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-410440710208780456.post-73356003780793248192010-03-27T11:36:48.131-07:002010-03-27T11:36:48.131-07:00Kamille-

Since you live in AZ, I'd wager your levels are high enough, and Maude's likely getting enough sun exposure on your walks too.

But I'd recommend that you talk it over with your pediatrician and then go with your own instincts.Lanihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07513306977618928729noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-410440710208780456.post-6136657990077289022010-03-27T11:24:32.593-07:002010-03-27T11:24:32.593-07:00what a great post! this was super helpful. i alway...what a great post! this was super helpful. i always wondered why they'd recommend supplementing breastmilk, after all...it is the perfect nutrition for baby...hmm.

question: so if i am getting a lot of sun exposure (we walk for about an hour each day) then i wouldn't need to supplement maude with some vitamin D since it would be passed through my milk?kamihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01036681846580798894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-410440710208780456.post-24286932359560836192010-03-27T09:50:09.682-07:002010-03-27T09:50:09.682-07:00Amen. And I totally agree with you on the Vitamin D thing - everybody here is sick over and over and over again in February and March... and I'm CONVINCED that a lot of it has to do with the fact that we've all lived without the sun for four straight months.Liz Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07549586800620411712noreply@blogger.com
